The Campo Tornado of 2010by ~MattGranzPhotography

A year ago, on May 31st, I witnessed the beautiful Campo Colorado Tornado. The view I had however, was the backlit side of the twister. Most everyone else on the chase was on the other side of the funnel and witnessed it as a white tornado with a beautiful blue sky behind it.

I was still miles away when I shot this at 200mm. I was jumping up and down in excitement because I figured with only five days to chase, and this being my next to last day out, that I wouldn't see anything more than a severe storm. I'm sure glad I was wrong!

Yeah, I've posted this everywhere I can. It's funny, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who caught it from this angle… most people caught the spectacular images from as close as 100 yards away from the West… I got there a little late, and got what I could before it dissipated.

It was about 5 miles away and moving at about 5 mph, so truth be told, it wasn't all too scary in person… but the clouds directly above me, dark and swirling did cause me to pause...
