This was my first run in with a shelf cloud. I had seen pictures of them, but never saw one in person, until this very moment. The 15 foot windows of the Pittsburgh Airport provided an ample view of the event as this storm front came rushing in towards us at high velocity. Lightning was striking everywhere and I completely forgot I had my camera on me as I watched this black cauldron monster approach.
This was Pittsburgh International Airport. The windows were like 15 ft high, and believe me, I had a plan in case something bad was going to happen… it hit us at about 60mph and it was incredible. By the time it was fully hitting us, I had moved myself and my family to safer quarters… just in case.
Yeah we all know what happened at Saint Louis airport don't we? Just seeing what was going on outside was scary Did they evacuate everybody off the planes?
